Junior / Youth Programmes

Classes for term 1 2010 begin on Monday 8th February

Registration evening between 5-7pm Thursday 4th February

The Learn to Sail courses at the Club are designed for children new to the sport that would like to experience the thrill of sailing. They can be absolute beginners with little or no experience. We have the latest equipment and some of the best coaches in the country.

If you are interested in learning to sail fill in the registration form, call the club on 09 5249945, or come down and see us at the club. We're based at The Landing, Orakei, Auckland.

 

Term Classes

Eight (8) week courses are held in Term 1 & Term 4 of the school year

There are three levels in Optimists, Cadet, 420 and keelboat classes through which to progress as your confidence and knowledge of sailing increases.

 

Optimist Level 1 - Learn to Sail 9 years +  

Optimist classes for juniors who are complete beginners.

Pre-requisite: Competent swimmer

Certification: Yachting New Zealand Level 1

Classes include: Safety, Wind awareness, Basic Boat Care, Parts of the boat and sail, Knots, Swimming with a lifejacket, Capsize experience and righting an upturned boat, Launching and retrieving of a ramp or beach, Rigging, Tacking and gybing, Getting out of Irons, Upwind sailing and downwind sailing, Rules and definitions

Optimist Level 2

The next stage,

Pre-requisite: Optimist Level 1

Certification: Yachting New Zealand Level 2

Classes include: Parts of the sail and boat advanced, Safety advanced, Knots , Fitness and injury prevention, Weather, Wind and tide, The five essentials of sailing, Tacking and Gybing advanced, Sailor overboard, Bailing while sailing, Sailing backwards, Rules, Hiking

Optimist Level 3 - Learn to Race

Pre-requisite: Optimist Level 2

Certification: RAYC Learn to Race

Extra: Club Racing on Sundays

Classes include: Getting around a course effectively, Starting, Starting tactics, General Tactics, Mark rounding, Advanced boat handling, Racing rules, Boat tuning

 

Cadets

An introductory boat for two-person sailing. The boats come equiped with a small jib and kite, as well as a main sail.

Pre-requisite: Optimist Level 2

Certification: RAYC Cadet Course

Extras: Club Racing on Sunday's is an extra for those wishing to push themselves in this  class of dinghy.

 

420

An advanced two-person dinghy, for those more experienced skippers and crew.

Pre-requisite: Optimist Level 3. A minimum combined weight of 110 

Extras: Club Racing on a sunday, plus school, national and international regattas are the next steps for those wanting to push themselves.
