Youth Learn to Paddle Program

nullThe Paddling  Academy has been developed to teach secondary school aged youngsters, between 13-19 years old, to paddle.  Taught on surf skis by professional paddling coaches, our Paddling  Academy is a safe and fun way to introduce young people to the sport of paddling.  Learning to paddle on a surf ski is a skill that is transferrable to Olympic flat water sprint kayaking, white water paddling, river paddling, surf lifesaving, surf ski racing and ocean kayaking.

Each programme is taught over eight sessions and cover:

·         Correct paddling technique,

·         Remounts and basic water safety skills,

·         The dynamics of the ocean, wind, tides and wave,

·         Downwind paddling.

Participants will also increase their overall fitness during the programme.

Why learn to paddle on a Surf Ski?

Surf Skis are purpose built for the ocean.  They are designed to catch and ride ocean swells.  With the right skill level, experience and conditions, paddlers can reach speeds of up to 25km per hour, which is exhilarating and fun.

Surf Skis are safe. They are essentially a 6 metre floatation device.  So if a paddler falls off a ski, it will not sink (unless there is a hole in it) and the paddler can hold on to it, and then get back on quickly.  The big difference between a surf ski and a kayak is that paddlers sit on a surf ski versus sitting in a kayak.  If a paddler falls out of a kayak, it can fill with water and sink.
